About the Scottish Youth Hostels Association

As a not-for-profit body with charitable status, the SYHA works for the benefit of all to promote recreation within Scotland, to increase international appreciation of our country and to improve understanding of hostelling in general. We are committed to offering visitors from home and abroad affordable, quality accommodation throughout the country. From cities to remote locations, crofters' cottages to castles, we offer a variety of accommodation to suit all tastes, all with the same friendly welcome.

We are the largest Hostel accommodation provider in Scotland with 4,500 beds in more than 67 locations.

The SYHA is a self-governing voluntary organisation, established in 1931, with over 30,000 current members. As a not-for-profit business, we invest back into the organisation, enabling us to develop the network to ensure high standards in existing properties. 67 Scottish Hostels including purpose-built premises, historic buildings and country cottages - in towns and cities, and in remote, rural and island locations.

SYHA is a leading member of the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) which embraces 60 countries, 4,000 Hostels world-wide and the European Union Federation of Youth Hostel Associations (EUFED). 60% of SYHA visitors are from outside Scotland, contributing to the economic health of our cities and more importantly ,fragile rural communities (particularly the north and north-west Highlands). The SYHA is a significant local employer throughout Scotland, professionally staffed by more than 450 employees.

We are a major player in Scottish tourism, with an annual turnover exceeding £6 million. With over 500,000 overnights each season and an estimated total value to the Scottish economy in excess of £20 million per annum.

SYHA is a founder member of the Visit Scotland Quality Assurance Grading Scheme for Hostels and is the original green tourism business. Environmental care has been our philosophy since starting out in 1931. SYHA has more environmental awards under the Visit Scotland Green Tourism Business Scheme than any other organisation.

We provide an extensive programme of outdoor activities for hostellers of all ages, and for those with and without previous experience of their chosen activity.

What better way than to stay in 5 star accommodation ?

Bedrooms

All of our bedrooms are furnished in a contemporary manner and are accessible only with a keycard. Bedrooms range from single & twin through to huge eight-bedded rooms, all come with lockers and are en suite as standard. We have a total of 302 beds with 22 rooms on each floor, except the ground floor which has seven. There are six configurations of family rooms and all floors have disabled rooms/facilities with additional bathrooms.

Self catering

As with all SYHA hostels, a complimentary self-catering kitchen & dining area are provided for guests who wish to cook their own meals or those travelling on a limited budget. All the latest appliances including cookers and fridges as well as cookware, crockery and cutlery are available. Everything you will need to enjoy a home-cooked meal.

Cafe/Bistro & Restaurant

A licenced Café / Bistro is available to guests and visitors alike. Open to all between 10am until 9pm (11am weekends), serving a wide range of delicious hot and cold snacks.

In addition, our 70-seater full-service Bistro is open from 7.30 for Breakfast then serving light and main meals from 10am (11am weekends). Food ranges from traditional Scotch recipes to more European inspired dishes, all at exceptional prices.

Large plasma screens can be found throughout the main public areas of the hostel, showing live television, promotional videos and announcements. Wi-fi coverage is available throughout the hostel for guests with their own laptops whilst 6 coin-operated internet stations are also available on the ground floor.

Other domestic facilities in the hostel include a laundry and drying room, which has three computerised washers and dryers. You can now store your luggage in our Super Safe coin lockers in the lobby for 50p per hour.

Our Hostel also features affordable conferencing facilities which are available to rent for both corporate functions and private gatherings. The facilities comprise of a multi-functional area which seats up to 50 people and has a number of configurations to suit all requirements. Hardware includes a ceiling mounted projector, remote control projection screen, entertainment system with laptop, DVD and freeview box. An induction loop is fitted in the seminar room and reception area for those with hearing impairments
